Worm and Worm wheels

Worm and Worm wheel is a transmission pair, wherein Worm is a straight shaft, like threaded screw and wheel is a circular teethed wheel. Teeth on the wheel are placed such a way that the worm meshes the wheel without clearance. This type of pair is used where considerable speed has to be reduced in small space. For example if any wheel is having 50 teeth and worm is having single start, then the outcome ratio is 1: 50. In short, one complete revolution of wheel require 50 revolutions of worm. Continuous lubrication should be provided to this system.

Worm : Worm can be single start or multiple start. Multiple start threads are provided to speed up the operation. Worms generally supported with bearings and one end of worm acts as driver. Worm threads are cut on a cylindrical shaft. The linear pitch of the worm should be same as circular pitch of the wheel for proper meshing.

Worm Wheel : Worm Wheel, in short designated as wheel, has gear like teeth. Central area on periphery is curved concavely toward inside to match the worms. It has teeth equals the required ratio.

Wheel is also supported by bearings and acts as driven element. It is connected to the required output element.
