Rack And Pinion Gears

Rack and pinion gear is a gear pair, wherein Rack is a straight geared entity and pinion is a round gear, as made for spur and helical gears. It is extensively used in mechanical industry, where transmission of motion is required from linear to circular or vice versa.

Rack gears : Rack gear having either spur or helical teeth spaced linearly on a straight bar. It can be made in segments and joined to make it as one entity. The linear pitch should match with circular pitch on the meshing pinion. To make it more advantageous we can put pinion in between two racks, one rack is fixed and another movable, to make the device move nearly twice of rack length. Rack gears should made and joined such a way that pinion travelling on racks and joint of racks should be without jerk.

Pinion gears : Pinion gears having spur or helical teeth, are round in shape are manufactured the same way as spur and helical gears are manufactured and having involute teeth.
